I think Choosing Life said it pretty well. JW's are constantly being reminded how bad "this old system" is. Every new magazine is another set of problems that have to wait until the "new system" to be fixed. Many a public talk have I sat through listening to how some day soon I will be persecuted, perhaps beaten, starved, tarred and feathered after hearing all the doom and gloom of the current state of affairs.

Why is the Watchtower Society so cruel to teens?
by RULES & REGULATIONS inmy mom just informed me that a 17 year old has been disfellowshipped at her hall.at least 7 others have been kicked out within the last 5 years.the publisher count is only 56 .why do they let the teens get baptized so young?
i was 14 and only got baptized because of pressure and the end was coming.if you weren't baptized you would be destroyed.. why don't they wait until everyone is at leat 21?
all these teens haven't come back and you won't ever see them unless they return.i haven't seen my cousin in over 2 years.no one went to his wedding, isn't invited to any family functions and is to be avoided at all costs.. the watchtower society should be ashamed that they act that way and the parents let them get away with it..

Reading this post is getting me angry, looking back on my teen years too. It is unbelievable how stupid the WTS is. They set the kids up for failure from the very first step. They take away all the fun things to do like join Brownies, make them look like goof balls for sitting during the Pledge of Alligance and not voting for student council and sitting in a classroom by themselves during pep-rallies. Then they are punished at holidays by being the only one who doesn't get any candy or a cupcake for birthdays.
They ask the kids to make a lifetime commitment at puberty. Because as everybody knows, puberty is the time in a person's life that they have the best the clearest thinking and has learned all of their important life lessons. If a kid is past 15 years old and not baptized he might not be a good influence on the other kids, so the pressure is doubled. So now you have a bunch of kids who have nothing to do so of course they are going to do dumb things. But that is the point of being a kid! Acting like a kid! But not for JW's. One dumb thing could spell your destruction, or you have to face the humiliation of a JC. So you have these kids filled with guilt and they haven't even done anything wrong.
Every convention and assembly they complain about how many young people are leaving the orginazation. And the only way for them to survive this old system is to pioneer. But do they ever tell you how to support yourself and buy a car and burn gas 70 hours a month on a no-skill, minimum-wage, part-time job? More guilt. Jehovah is not happy with you because of you selfishly work full-time to buy unnecessary food, and clothing and auto insurance. This is why the kids leave!
Sorry, that was a bit of a rant, I feel better now. Thanks.

What is this about "responsible child bearing hype in the1990's"? I think I missed that. Would someone elaborate?

I remember the last big announcement. A letter was read at a Sunday meeting telling every one to attend the service meeting the following week because there was going to be a really important exciting announcement read that night. What is it! What is it! This is so exciting I can't wait! What is it! - We have updated the Organized Ministry book, Praise Jah!

Is manner of dress more important than respect for Jehovah?
by LaurieM inmy mother and i were discussing the fact that she was told by a minister of the jehovah's witnesses upon being asked whether mother was going to be attending a book study at her local kingdom hall and mother requested whether she could wear slacks she was told that it would not show respect to jehovah and that women in the kingdom hall should "dress appropriately" by wearing skirts or dresses.
after discussing this, my mother and i feel that the manner of dress of a jehovah's witnesses, whether man or woman is totally irrelevant to respect to jehovah god.
clearly, even if one were to present themselves at hall in rags, that person is not disrespectful to jehovah if his mind and heart are open to god's word.

Yes, manner of dress is one of the most important things to a JW. It was 3 or 4 weeks in a row discussing this topic from the school book, a few months back. Everything is about making sure the WTS looks good. This is why they have so many articles about sticking with your wife. Not because they want happy mariages or happy people in general. Its because your divorce makes them look bad. Your (insert problem here) makes them look bad. Your manner of dress makes them look bad. Women only wearing skirts or dresses is just another way to keep women submissive due to their 1960's perfect-family, man-in-charge, Dick VanDyke image. Men are supposed to dress like business men circa 1960. Women are supposed to dress like housewives circa 1960. (This is why so many young women have wardrobes full of ugly "meeting clothes" that they would be emarassed to wear anywhere else.

Who Will Be Celebrating Thanksgiving & XMas This Year???
by minimus infunny thing about jws----many celebrate thanksgiving but say they're only eating turkey with all the fixings by coincidence.
god made the food to be consumed everyday.
then you get witnesses who celebrate christmas the day before or after with all sorts of presents but they won't give it on the 25th because that day is pagan.

This is my first Christmas in twenty some years so I had to start small. We got an 18 inch tinsel tree and since we are not officially out yet I was almost running to the check out for fear that someone may see me carrying a Christmas tree through Kmart.
V,
I can top your Thanksgiving. I was at "not a thanksgiving dinner" at a MS's house with the CO, pioneers and an annointed sister!

Are JWs chronic liars?
by Kristofer init's been about a year since i've been on this board.
and what brought me here was me (a non-jw) seeing a jw girl.
i've been out of this situation for a while now.
-

Jehovah's Witnesses do not lie. They know the definition of the word well and do everything they can think of to not lie. This would include being evasive, answering questions that you did not ask, not answering questions that you did ask, telling partial truths, using partial quotes, etc. And where do they learn how to do this? If you have ever read any of their literature or listened to a talk, you'd know.
